Justice for Yves Sakila!

Statement from CSN

On Friday the 15th of May, Yves Sakila, a Congolese immigrant, was tragically murdered in broad daylight by five men. This brutal act of violence was the inevitable and predictable result of the growing racist and white supremacist hatred across Ireland which our governments have entirely failed to confront. To ensure this violent and bigoted ideology does not survive, we must understand its source. Racism is not merely the result of ignorance, it is a crucial part of the imperialist machine, devaluing the lives and suffering of the peoples of imperialised countries to justify their exploitation and brutalisation. Here in Ireland, it serves much the same purpose, subjecting immigrants and ethnic minorities to intense economic exploitation and increasingly, violent abuse and murder.

While our governments may oppose this racism in words, in deeds they subject asylum seekers to years in uncertainty and poverty in inhumane conditions in direct provision centres or low-quality accommodation.

Yves Sakila's murder was the fault of a system which values lives less than profit, which would kill a man on the mere suspicion of shoplifting while stealing countless billions from the labour of workers. This violence is inherent to capitalism and cannot be resolved with good-will or reforms. The system that murdered Yves Sakila is the same system that has murdered and displaced millions in Palestine, Lebanon, and Iran; the same system that has enslaved hundreds of thousands of people in the Democratic Republic of Congo; the same system which has killed and imprisoned the people of the occupied six counties.

The end of this violence is only possible through the destruction of the entire imperialist machine and the final victory of socialism. The struggle against racism is critical in and inseparable from the struggle for national liberation, the struggle against imperialism, and the struggle for socialism.

Private security companies across Ireland have been used by both the state and private businesses to carry out their dirty work, carrying out evictions, EOJ orders, and crackdowns on protests with little oversight. As the Irish Council for Civil Liberties states "The Private Security Authority's licensing requirements for security guarding, for example, do not refer to the use of force." This lack of clarity from an official state body amounts to murder by negligence.

We echo the Congolese community's call for justice for Yves Sakila, which can only be achieved through the abolition of capitalism.

Justice for Yves Sakila, killed at 35 years young.
